The stories of many immigrant women have been lost in history. Only isolated notices of births, marriages, and deaths remain. Mary Nelson Nerlin, a Swedish-American immigrant, has been waiting for over a century for someone to reclaim her history. This is her story.

Join Mary, who, in 1886, leaves her family and native land of Sweden behind, crossing the Atlantic Ocean with little more than the clothes on her back, in search of the American Dream. But the New World isn’t all she’s expected it to be. The devastating economic crash of 1893 leaves her out of work, marrying a man she hardly knows, and joining the homestead movement out west. The couple settles on land taken from the Crow reservation in southern Montana. Homesteading on Poverty Flat is tough even in a good year. From the threats of hunger, accidents and illness on the Montana frontier to raising four “American” children, Mary faces her challenges with grit and determination.

This is the extraordinary story of Mary, but also the story of so many immigrant women who came to America to build a better life for themselves and their children.

Am I Not an Ordinary Woman? eBook Val Nerlin Hillers James K McCool

The author uses the creative device of continuous letters from her Swedish grandmother to many family members throughout her active life. Although fictional and written by the author, they are based on careful research and compilation of family records, stories, and interviews with living family members who knew her grandmother. Struggles, successes, tragedy, and persistence characterize the book and keep it lively until the end. Genealogists and those who wish to document their own family's history will enjoy reading Val Hillers' account. I have passed my copy along to others with an enthusiastic "read this!" recommendation.

Am I Not an Ordinary Woman? eBook Val Nerlin Hillers James K McCool Reviews

What a wonderful way to tie together the bits and pieces Ms. Hillers knew about her grandmother's life. With her careful research and help from family members, she's brought her grandmother to life for all of us to know. Genealogy buffs should give serious thought to using this technique to create a picture of an ancestor as a real person.

What a gift she's given to the younger members of her family who will never know this older relative. And what a gift to me--through this ordinary woman's letters, I've learned to appreciate what my own grandmothers must have experienced when they immigrated to the United States from Poland and Austria.
So wonderful to view a slice of what life was really like during those times. Reminded me of Laura Ingalls' books.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A delightful read for all ages. Always thought I would enjoy being a pioneer woman, but after reading Am I Not an Ordinary Woman, realized there was way too much work and little fun.
I really enjoyed this book. What an exciting if not terribly harsh, experience for a non English speaking woman who immigrated from Sweden In the early 1900's. I felt her pain and her happiness.
Very good book. I never knew much about the Nerlin side of my family. I couldn't put it down and actually read most of it to my wife. We would stop and discuss many things that we learned.
Good
Brings the Nerlin family to life. The use of the "letters" makes the story very easy to read and gives you a feeling of personal involvement. Highly recommend.
