Too Rich The Family Secrets of Doris Duke offers a fascinating and honest inside portrait of a woman whose life and death are shrouded in mystery. This highly entertaining biography, written by Jason Thomas and culled from the recollections and family records of Duke's godson, Pony Duke, represents the only candid record of Doris Duke's remarkable life and highly controversial death. From early childhood—too rich to play with other children for fear of disease, kidnapping, or mixing with those of less desirable lineage—Doris was virtually imprisoned in a cold, sterile mansion on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue (the house reeked of ammonia used to keep her environment germ-free) with a powerful father and a bitter, blue-blooded mother. As she broke free into adulthood, Doris inherited a massive fortune and learned to live life on her own terms. She entered into an arranged marriage and later divorced (her first); she learned the ways of sex and desire in the arms of a muscular Hawaiian Olympic champion; she followed her next love into World War II and returned alone. And amid her numerous and headline-making affairs, Doris Duke increased her vast wealth. Her investments in real estate, art, and business allowed her to leave behind far more money than she inherited, something few heiresses can boast. She learned from an early age that those who befriended her mind or romanced her body more than likely desired her wallet, and this realization left Doris Duke a lonely woman.
From interviews, private family documents, and the words of Doris herself, Too Rich provides facts and insights never before unearthed by the outside media. Her bizarre adoption of a thirty-five-year-old woman, Chandi Heffner, and, in later years, sensational events surrounding Duke's death and suspected murder in 1993—including the inside story of her butler, Bernard Lafferty—are meticulously documented in this uniquely intimate portrait of one of the most interesting and controversial celebrities of the twentieth century.
PONY DUKE is Doris Duke's cousin and godson and one of the surviving members of the Duke clan. He is a self-employed businessman and rancher living in Montana. JASON THOMAS is a novelist and former nationally syndicated columnist.
She was the richest child born in America; she had the president's private phone number; her scandalous marriages and affairs—with an ambassador, Olympian, musician, politician, general, international stud, and movie star—were legendary. But who, really, was Doris Duke? Who was the mysterious woman behind the billions, who took private pleasure in singing gospel music, loving nature, and seducing men? What insurmountable rules and expectations of wealth corralled her life into the world of the lonely elite—and led, at the age of eighty, to her alleged murder?
Too Rich was made into a successful CBS television mini-series entitled Too Rich The Secret Life of Doris Duke starring Richard Chamberlain and Lauren Bacall.

Loved it. I also heard rumors that the contents of the book is still under litigation. In any case, it is a well written book about you girl born to one of the richest families in the world, the Duke family. The same family better known today for their namesake institution, the Duke University, then the American Tobacco company. The girl is Doris Duke, who grew up sheltered from most rituals of life in general, such as going to school or having a career. Her father, Buck Duke, ensured the wealth of her daughter by betting on the United States early 20th century, which is now known as the American Century. Buying treasury bonds, hedged with tons of gold in safes around the world, Miss Duke was forever banished into being too rich. What she witnesses with people around her and with herself are some of the ugliest extremes of the human nature. The lesson learned here is this: very rich people shouldn't give all their wealth to anyone who doesn't know how to earn it in the first place. The story makes the strongest possible point in the validity of foundations such as The Giving Pledge, founded by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett.

Too Rich The Family Secrets of Doris Duke eBook Jason Thomas Pony Duke Reviews
I liked the insider details offered in this narrative of life of Doris Duke who comes off as a fairly intelligent gal with an eye on her finances. There were spelling errors in the manuscript which I find annoying
What a ride! This book is a multi-generational look into one of the country's most wealthy and influential families, all statrting with tobacco. Doris Duke could have made such a difference with her money and came very close a couple of times but never quite got there. She let her fear of publicity and her massive libido get in the way.
The characters are very well written and have big personalities and egos. All are very interesting and could have supported a book on their own!
I will never look at Duke University the same way!
Author did a great job of describing the live of Doris Duke and her family. There was a bunch of great history too for all us history buffs. I really think Doris was a kind person and a good person. She was confused on what sex was and what love was. I feel that was because of the way she was raised. I wish she could of found real love sooner then she did. I felt bad someone with all that money and so much to give that she died alone around those who seemed to only want to harm her. I really wish she would have been involved in with Duke college. I wish she would have taken courses there and received a degree in whatever her heart desired. I think that would have gave her the confidence she was lacking. I thought the sex was quite heavy in this but I think the book needed it to tell the real story.
After visiting her famous Shangri-La estate in Hawaii, I became intrigued. I was looking for the least "sensational" book I could find. Such an interesting, yet sad life. I feel like I have a much better understanding of Doris, the woman. I recommend the book.
The story of Doris Duke is a fascinating one. She was one of the original poor little rich girls, uneducated and unloved. Her massive fortune brought her the homes, the material treasures, but never love or a sense of fulfillment. At the end of her life, she was isolated, mistreated, betrayed and possibly murdered by an unsavory crew of servants, medical personnel and dubious legal and financial overseers.
The style of this biography which draws on some family sources is crass and sensationalistic. There is little sympathy for the central character. The writing style seems disjointed and the editing is so bad that it is distracting. Hopefully other writers will attempt the tale with better results.
I've read another book on Doris Duke and this story on the her was so much more entertaining. It was filled with detail about her beginnings and her family. There were times you wanted to cheer for her and then times when you wondered what was she thinking. I was a little disappointed that it didn't thoroughly cover the time that was related to the adoption of her grown daughter but it was very interesting to learn about the baby she lost and the aftermath of her death of Doris. I also really enjoyed the coverage on the many love affairs she had. It highlighted a very sad life of this dynamic woman. She lost so much that mattered in her personal life for one who had so much materialistically. There was a good message there. It was especially poignant during her latter years when she become ill and the unbelievable treatment from her butler. Very good read.
I will say that I didn't really care for this author's writing style. This book is not written as a historical piece like many of the other books about famous American families I have read as of late. Even others written by family members do not come off quite as dishy and tongue-in-cheek as this book does. The author takes great delight in making little sarcastic puns and jokes about the key players in this story. That being said, I still really liked the book because I enjoyed the Duke story. I think Doris Duke had a good heart and any of her shortcomings are easily explained by her cold and conniving mother and her duplicitous first husband, Cromwell. I loved the book and would enjoy reading more about Ms. Duke.
